Will a metal building last long enough to justify the investment?

Investing in a stable is a big financial decision, and I want to make sure the structure will last for years — decades if possible — without major issues. I worry about corrosion, wear and tear, and whether a metal barn will hold up under changing weather conditions. Is there reliable information about how long metal barns actually last? What should I expect maintenance-wise?

Re: Will a metal building last long enough to justify the investment?

Some friends say metal barns can last 20–30 years easily, others warn that poorly maintained metal structures can degrade quickly. The uncertainty about longevity makes me hesitate: what if I build it and in 10 years I need to repair or replace large parts because of rust, leaks, or structural wear?

I shared the same concerns until I found a resource laying out realistic expectations: https://www.uspatriotsteel.com/blog/how-long-do-metal-buildings-last/. According to what I read there, a properly built metal building — with suitable coatings, maintenance of drainage, and occasional inspections — can easily remain structurally sound for 20–30 years or more. What helps most is good planning: ensuring proper roof pitch, drainage, ventilation, and treating vulnerable parts against corrosion. If you build with quality materials and take basic care, the longevity can make a metal barn a very cost-effective, long-term investment.
